2013 Assessment Findings

India is one of the world’s largest importers of timber and wood products – around 30% of India’s wood demand is met by imports. The 2013 assessment found that an estimated 17% of imports are illegally sourced, a much higher proportion than many other consumer countries such as Japan and the USA. Its consumption of illegal wood is rising more rapidly than any other country surveyed. There has been very limited recognition of the problem in India to date and the government has shown little response.
